U13 GAYNOR CUP FINAL

U13 GAYNOR CUP FINAL

DISAPPOINTMENT FOR U13s IN GAYNOR FINAL

GAYNOR CUP U13 FINAL

Limerick Desmond (0) 0

MGL South (3) 3

Our u13 girls squad closed out their historic Gaynor Cup campaign last Sunday against MGL South in the Cup Final. The girls were very unfortunate to come up short this time against a very strong MGL side. Three nil was the final score line after sixty minutes of football.

The Desmond side never really got going in the first half and after ten minutes found themselves one nil behind, this was the first time we went behind in a game in the competition and it certainly felt like uncharted waters for sure. Six minutes later MGL were two to the good, scoring from range after a short corner leaving the returning Goalkeeper Sara Mae Murphy with no chance. Limerick Desmond did have some bit of joy down the right wing where Eleanor Blake threatened some what from some through balls from Chloe Wallace in midfield. But it was the team from the capital who would get the next goal and virtually killing off the game.

A goal mouth scramble ending with the MGL striker grabbing her and MGL’s third goal of the final, two minutes later it was half time and at three nil, the Treaty side looked down and out. Manager Alan Loftus had some words at half time and it seemed to spur them on in the 2nd half.

A much better showing from Limerick Desmonds in the second half and they should really have had a goal back, a Free kick from the right in swinging from Eleanor Blake’s left boot deflected off the underside of the bar. Eva Loftus and Madison McGuane along with captain Kristina Bokmane tried to make some openings happen in the second half and at the other end our reliable centre back pairing of Emma Meaney and Mya Moloney were keeping MGL out. But alas, the final whistle came and MGL celebrated their U13 Cup victory.

Our U13 girls squad can be proud of what they have achieved in this fairy tale season with a 100% record in the group stages with wins against Cork, Kerry, South Tipperary and Limerick County and MGL North away in the semi-final. However, there is much more to come from this squad and management team and we eagerly look forward to the next stage of their development.
